Paestum
Paestum ancient Greek city called by its founders Poseidonia in honor of Poseidon, is located about 30 kilometers from Salerno. The name Paestum was given in 273 when it became a Roman colony. In the Roman period in the third century new public buildings arose in Paestum, such as the Amphitheater, the Forum and the Gymnasium. Paestum is dominated by its archaeological area bounded by walls and towers. Not far from the Greek temples you can visit the rich museum containing objects of Greek and Lucan manufacture, paintings found in the Tuffatore’s tomb, the only remaining example of Greek painting of Magna Graecia. Paestum is also known as the homeland of buffalo mozzarella, a delicious fresh cheese.
