Ravello
We find Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone both in the town of Ravello.
At 365 meters above sea level, enjoying a view of the Gulf of Salerno and the Tyrrhenian Sea, we find Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone both in the town of Ravello. Defined also as a city of music for its concerts that take place every year in the summer, in the gardens of Villa Rufolo. Villa Cimbrone also surrounded by a famous garden which is the (Belvedere) of Ravello. Both villas were residences of noble families of Ravello, and with their names have given life to two hotels: Hotel Rufolo and Hotel Cimbrone. In Ravello many palaces of ancient and noble families have become hotels, such as: Palazzo Rogadeo become Hotel Bonadies, Palazzo Confalone become Hotel Palumbo and ruins of another ancient palace are located near the Hotel Caruso. Ravello was founded in the fifth century and began the wool trade to the Mediterranean and reached its splendor from the ninth century, under the Republic of Amalfi and the principality of Salerno. But later it was looted and destroyed by the Pisans, in fact some families who lived in Ravello moved to Naples. Ravello also develops along the coastal road with two of its fractions, Marmorata and Castiglione, than from Ravello, we can admire a side of the city, which goes from Via della Repubblica to Via Giovanni Boccaccio, which Ravello overlooks Maiori and Minori on the Amalfi Coast.
On the Amalfi Coast, every summer a classical music event, takes place. It is a cultural event of the Ravello Festival. The idea of this event was born in 1953, following the wake of previous musical events dedicated to Richard Wagner. When he visited Villa Rufolo on his three-day vacation in Amalfi, Wagner was amazed when, inside the Villa Rufolo, he discovered that Klingsor’s garden was as he had imagined it in the music he already wrote. The provincial organization for tourism in Salerno, thought to dedicate an event aimed at music lovers of the German composer. For more than 15 years the Ravello Foundation has been taking care of the Ravello Festival, classical music evenings, performed by international orchestras, inside Villa Rufolo. The orchestras play on a terrace, which dominates part of the Amalfi coast, with the view of Maiori and Minori.
